What's in a Name? Utah's Tongue-Twisting Towns
Utah loves a distinctive name. It shows up in how we name our kids, and it definitely shows up on the map. If you are moving here, a little pronunciation practice goes a long way at the grocery store.
Tooele sounds like too-ILL-uh. Kamas is KAY-mus. Heber rhymes with PEA-ber, as in HEE-ber. The Uintah mountains are you-IN-tuh, and Duchesne is doo-SHAYN.
Don't worry if you get one wrong. Locals will gently correct you, and then probably invite you to dinner. Part of my job is to help you feel at home in all of it, including the names.
